GCOHC is a training center that specializes in emergency response and hazardous worker operations. It was originally one of the first labor-sponsored occupational health clinics in the nation. Last year, GCOHC celebrated its 20 year anniversary of service to industry and workers throughout the state of Ohio. The training program in emergency response hazardous waste operations is carefully monitored by the Board of Directors which is comprised of representatives recognized nationally and internationally in emergency response, hazardous waste operations, and environmental fields.

In 1987 the National Institute of Environmental Health Sciences (NIEHS) awarded the University of Cincinnati a Workforce Development Training Grant to teach emergency response and the handling of hazardous waste to workers and their communities. The University of Cincinnati Department of Environmental Health, formed the "Midwest Consortium Hazardous Waste Worker Training Program headed by Dr. Carol Rice, which is comprised of nine organizations throughout the Midwest region of the United States."

Since it's inception, The Greater Cincinnati Occupational Health Center is a member of this consortium and is responsible for training workers and industry throughout the state of Ohio. This program is entering its 17th year of service funded by NIEHS. All courses and services comply with the OSHA safety standard of 1910.120 and ANZI guidelines. GCOHC must abide by the highest teaching standards established by the Midwest Consortium Hazardous Waste Worker Training Program of the University of Cincinnati and the National Institute of Environmental Health Sciences which includes its approval of instructors and use of course curriculum. Participants are issued certificates from GCOHC and the University of Cincinnati.
